When Will We Ever Learn?

   So, this is how it happens: a blustering, red-faced megalomaniac, emboldened  by his moments of fame, rests proudly on his repeated opportunity to delver the final blow--"You're fired!"--collects fellow narcissists to . . . to enrich themselves. . . .


But they are already rich . . . 


Yes, but it doesn't hurt to be rich, richer, richest, then richest ever.


Right, but, it's not just money, is it? $ are a draw, an accomplishment, a better-than-thou move, a move that wants, no needs more--and a sign that having everything will never be enough.


Yep. So he keeps on, is helped, aided, abetted, by others who want a place on the golden merry-go-round, on the jet plane to fame, to everybody knows my name.


So, it's a drug. Stronger than weed, than cocaine, stronger than heroin, an addictive with no side effects.


Yes, and we watch, terrified, some of us; others fascinated, apparently jealous, wanting a piece of him, of the infection, of the fame, the wealth, who want to go where he is going, who want the power and the arches of gold.


So how will it end?


Well, every empire falls . . . and usually from within.


Whew! Yes--yes, you are right--it's coming. Pete Seeger asked the question best seventy years ago: "When will we ever learn? When will we ever learn?"
